Boston Biomedica Names Ten Staff Members to New Corporate and Business Unit Positions

- Staff Changes Made In Concert with Corporate Reorganization -

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass., July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Boston Biomedica, Inc. (Nasdaq: BBII) an infectious diseases management company, today announced that four senior staff members have been named as Senior Vice Presidents and General Managers of the Company's newly formed business units, each with direct revenue and profit responsibility. In addition, the Company also appointed six other employees to key positions. BBI's transition to a business unit structure and the related staff changes are directed toward utilizing resources most effectively to increase revenue and profitability within each business.

BBI Diagnostics

Barry M. Warren will become Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Company's BBI Diagnostics business unit, which is focused on manufacturing and selling quality control and other diagnostic products to increase the accuracy of in-vitro diagnostic tests for infectious diseases. BBI Diagnostics is currently being formed as a legal entity; previously, all quality control and other diagnostic products were sold under the parent company name, "Boston Biomedica, Inc." Since 1993, Mr. Warren has served as Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing. Prior to that, he served as Group Director of Marketing of Organon Teknika, a manufacturer of infectious disease reagents and worked for several years at different positions with Abbott Laboratories.

BBI Clinical Laboratories

Patricia Garrett, Ph.D., will become Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Company's BBI Clinical Laboratories business unit, which is focused on providing specialty laboratory testing services for the infectious diseases industry. Since 1988, Dr. Garrett has served as BBI's Senior Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Strategic Programs. Previously, she served as the Technical Director of the Chemistry Laboratory, Department of Laboratory Medicine, at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center. On a corporate level, Dr. Garrett will continue to be involved with several strategic programs, including being Principal Investigator on an HIV surveillance contract with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

BBI Biotech Research Laboratories

Mark M. Manak, Ph.D, will become Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Company's BBI Biotech Research Laboratories business unit, which is focused on providing research and development services for the other BBI business units as well as contract research services to the infectious disease industry. Since 1992, Dr. Manak has served as BBI's Senior Vice President, Research and Development. Prior to that, he served as Director of Contract and Services of Biotech Research Laboratories.

BBI Source Scientific

David Petersen will become Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Company's BBI Source Scientific business unit, which is focused on developing, manufacturing and marketing laboratory and diagnostic instruments for infectious disease testing. Mr. Petersen has over 22 years of experience in operations management and materials planning. Before joining BBI in 1998 as Vice President, Laboratory Instrumentation, he held key management positions for Matrix Instruments and Farr Company, Inc.

Each business unit's General Manager will report directly to Kevin Quinlan, BBI's newly appointed President and Chief Operating Officer. "These four individuals are ideally suited to play the critical role of leading each of our business units," commented Mr. Quinlan. "Each has extensive experience in his or her area of focus and a demonstrated track record of achievement. The foremost goal of our reorganization is to enable us to increase the profitability of each of our business units. I feel very confident to have these individuals at the helm."

BBI also announced new corporate positions for several other senior staff members as a result of the Company's reorganization. William R. Prather, M.D., currently Senior Vice President of Business Development, will become Senior Vice President of Finance and Business Development and will assume many of the financial responsibilities formerly filled by Kevin Quinlan as Chief Financial Officer. Richard C. Tilton, Ph.D., currently Senior Vice President of Laboratory Services at BBICL, will become Senior Vice President of Science and Technology for the parent Company. Graham Allaway Ph.D., currently Vice President of Drug Development will become Senior Vice President for Drug Development. Edward H. Myles CPA, currently Director of Finance at BBIDx, will become Corporate Controller and work closely with Dr. Prather. Linda St. Germain, currently Director of Marketing at BBIDx, will become Vice President, Sales and Marketing and Janet A. O'Connor, currently Director, QA/QC at BBI Diagnostics will become Director, QA/QC and Regulatory Affairs for BBIDx.
