Defects in mitochondrial function have been linked to many of the diseases associated with aging, including cancer, Type II diabetes mellitus, Parkinson’s disease, atherosclerotic heart disease, stroke, and Alzheimer’s dementia. To understand these diseases, as well as fundamentals of basic cell biology, studies often need to be done at the subcellular level.
